I’ve been thinking a lot about how I’ve managed pain since my hip replacement. Truth is, I’ve been through a lot—aches, pains, and a whole lot of stubborn joints (shoulders, elbows, neck, spine… arthritis just keeps making the rounds).
I’ve never been one to reach for pain meds, and I still won’t. Instead, I’ve been working with my doctor and getting epidural injections for my neck, trying to keep things moving.
For the last year, though, I’ll be honest: I tried to mute the pain with a few beers each day. Not to get buzzed—just to take the edge off. Some days it was three, some days six, but it became my routine.
It worked for a while, but honestly? The beer stopped doing anything for me. I didn’t even enjoy it for the effect—just the taste, and even that started to fade.
A few days ago, I hit my limit. I decided I’m done with the daily beers. They’re just not helping, and it’s time for a better way.
So here’s what I’m focusing on now:
- Getting back to the gym like usual, pushing through the tough days, and building back strength.
- Getting back on the bike—full-time if I can, or at least a few days every week. My legs are ready to put in the work again.
- Hydration: Water, coconut water, Liquid IV—keeping my body fueled the right way.
- Nutrition: I’m grabbing my nutrition drinks from One Stop Nutrition, and I’m eating a lot of healthy food. My appetite is huge lately, and honestly, it feels like my body is gearing up for some serious cycling again.
Pain is still part of the journey, but I’m choosing to move through it instead of numb it. Thanks for being here and following along as I figure out what works, what doesn’t, and how to keep pedaling forward.
If you’ve ever had to change up your own routines to deal with pain or setbacks, I’d love to hear what’s worked for you. Let’s keep each other motivated and moving!
